Idite Lesom advises Russians facing conscription to gather medical records, check eligibility for exemptions or deferments, and prepare applications for alternative civilian service before facing recruitment pressure. In guidance published by Meduza, the group urges students to verify that deferments have been formally granted and applicants to retain copies of submitted documents. It stresses that refusals of alternative civilian service can be appealed.

It cautions against promises of quiet postings or short contracts, whose stated expiry dates do not guarantee discharge during mobilization. Other advice includes arranging legal representation, saving human rights advocates’ contact details and agreeing with relatives on what to do if contact is lost.
