Sgt. 1st Class Kenneth Carrell and Spc. Evan Murch extend their enlistments in the Virginia Army National Guard during a ceremony held May 27, 2026, during Exercise Karelian Sword 26 near Kouvola, Finland. Karelian Sword is a multinational training exercise designed to strengthen interoperability and readiness for the more than 10,000 troops participating from across the Finnish Defence Forces and partner nations. Approximately 35 Virginia Soldiers, primarily assigned to the 237th Engineer Company, will spend two weeks in Finland training alongside their Finnish counterparts. Iltalehti reports that a group of conscripts were filmed on Sunday evening on Perniöntie in Salo breaking roadside traffic signs and later dancing on top of a car. A witness interviewed by the paper said the episode happened roughly between 22:00 and 23:00, while cars continued passing by, and that the men stayed there for about 15–30 minutes. The witness speculated they may have come from the nearby Dragsvik garrison, though that appears unconfirmed.

Maybe conscription is not the school of civics and discipline everyone seems to think it is.
