An article in Greek Health Pharma reports that the Panhellenic Medical Association (PIS) is urging the Greek government to immediately amend Law 5265/2026 on doctors’ conscription deferments. PIS argues that the new rule effectively ends deferment for medical specialty training after age 28, forcing residents to interrupt their specialization, disrupting those waiting in specialty queues, and creating uncertainty about completing training.
They warn this will intensify the “brain drain” of young doctors abroad, especially given long hospital waiting lists that push many trainees near or past 28, and ultimately further strain the National Health System (ESY). PIS calls for restoring the previous framework that allowed deferment until age 33.
“The Panhellenic Medical Association (PIS) is calling for an immediate change to the law on doctors’ conscription, arguing that interrupting specialty training after the age of 28 will intensify the departure of young scientists and will place an additional burden on the National Health System (ESY).”
